My review of The Citadel
reviewed on: 06/14/2021 by DavidOur family had a virtual tour first and the people we spoke with her very nice and friendly. The community looked very clean so we reserved an in person tour appointment. However when we pulled up to the community we noticed there was multiple floor levels and our loved one did not want anyone living above her.
Somewhere in the meh range for us
reviewed on: 06/12/2019 by Stephanie WallaceMy Mom actually did not enjoy living here. She only stayed a couple of months. Most of the staff were wonderful and friendly and they worked really hard to meet everyone's needs. It was sometimes hard to get timely service, so perhaps they're a little understaffed. I loved that they had a call button that the residents can push for anything they need, but there is no way to distinguish a minor need from a major one except for the pull-cord in the bathroom, so I think it's hard for staff to know who needs help immediately and who can wait a while. One hall perpetually smells like urine, and when we asked about it during our tour she brushed it off as a one-time event. But it smelled like urine almost every time I went there. Almost all the residents I met were sweet and friendly, but there was one lady who was very rude to my mother and kind of ruined her experience. It just made her feel like she didn't belong there. Perhaps there is a little bit of a clique? They were all really nice to me though, so maybe it was just my mom. They have a TON of activities planned, and I think the staff has tried really hard to make them varied and meet lots of interests, but for some reason most of the activities (at least on the assisted living side) are not very well attended. Assisted living side residents are able to attend activities on the independent living side, but there may not be anyone available to help them get back to their rooms if they need it. In retrospect, perhaps a place that did not segregate assisted living from independent living would have been a better match for my Mom's needs. My feeling is that the independent activities are probably better attended. We loved that there are lots of spaces families can reserve to have family get-togethers, including a kitchen area. They can also use the pool area, but need to have their resident family-member with them of course. I liked that they come check on my mom every few hours, but she felt like her privacy was invaded because EVERYONE had a key to her apartment. It kind of goes along with the territory, but it's something to think about. I love that they have a beautiful chapel on-site and have church services for many different denominations on Sunday. The maintenance guys were pretty quick to attend to emergencies, like a broken toilet or a leaky faucet, but did not get around to minor repairs. My mom thought the food was great, I thought it was just okay. Very expensive for non-residents though. Overall, our experience there was okay. I would have liked her to give it more of a chance, but she was not happy there so we made other arrangements.
4 stars and well deserved
