My dad was doing great in the assisted living part of Shady Grove also known as Kingshire Manor. The food is good although they need to cook the potatoes more. The community is incredible and the staff are fabulous. He was progressing well prior to his stroke. Since his stroke he is living in the long term section Shady Grove.

Shady Grove Center

I have nothing but wonderful things to say about the staff and the facility at the Shady Grove Center My family and I are completely satisfied with the care that my mother- in-law received there. My mother-in-law recently fell at her house and required a stay at a rehabilitation facility. She had cut her head and fractured her arm. In a short amount of time, my husband had to look at facilities in the area. He decided on the Shady Grove Center. From the moment that my mother-in-law arrived, she encountered staff members who were warm, welcoming and professional. The social worker, head of nursing, and a variety of other staff members met with us the day after she arrived and laid out a specific plan of care for her. This included physical and occupational therapy and an assortment of other services. They welcomed us to contact them with any concerns that came up. At least one family member visited my mother in law every day. We were all extremely pleased with her care. It really seemed as though everyone went out of their way to tend to her needs. Although we were anticipating supplementing her meals with home cooked goodies, she was completely happy with the food that was served. Her occupational and physical therapy sessions were very thorough, while taking into consideration her physical injuries. The therapists communicated with us regularly about her progress. The nursing staff was very friendly and helped her with many of the activities where her mobility was limited. They always seemed very knowledgeable and efficient. Her room and the rest of the facility always seemed extremely clean. The social worker was available any time we had questions. She coordinated all of the insurance issues and many other aspects of my mother-in-law’s care. When it came time for my mother-in-law to return home, she seemed to magically arrange everything. This included such things as a hospital bed for their home, home therapy, and home nursing services. Having had a number of experiences with reputable rehabilitation facilities when caring for my own mother, I can honestly say that the Shady Grove Center was outstanding by comparison. Our experience there was as close to perfect as possible.

Seniors are isolated with limited information.

After having a phone conference with the staff, and you inquire about your dad having a fall and the social worker said we have a 139 patient and we can’t do one on one. When you call the front desk, you have to call at least six times before you get an answer. And when they finally answer they don’t have questions to you answers. Just sad that seniors are having to be isolated with limited information.

Lack of care for mom

reviewed on: 10/24/2019 by Pamela

My mother has been in this facility for a couple of months. starting with rehab and now just recently moved to long term care at Kingshire. First let me state that while I'm speaking with a nurse at the nurses station, she steps on a roach then pushes it aside. instead of having it cleaned up. Numerous days my mother has been left in a room that the nurses knocked over her drink or food and have left it there for hours until my arrival. The staff was coming into my mother's room and was watching the TV. At one point, they left their shopping bag of men's ties in the lounge chair. Not until they found that I work in the health field did they begin to really take my complaints seriously. Upon my mothers move to the Kingshire. I've decided they will no longer stress me out about my mother's care after these last incidents that have taken place. I've decided to share my story with other families to make them aware. I've taken numerous pictures and videos where now I will write my reports in the health community and with the State of Maryland. Why don't I move here? Because she is very frail and 91 years old. I believe if you're in a job that is to care for people. Then you should care for people. Here is the straw that broke the camels back. I arrive early the next day after the move, 9:00am. My mother had been placed in a room that I requested her numerous times not to be placed in. The room had not been cleaned. I meet with the manager Gary, someone finally vacuums the floor two hours after my arrival. As far as my mother, she had not been cleaned or feed. 9:30, I'm asking the nurse where is my mother's food. She blew me off and told me the patients that did not need as much help will be fed first then they will get my mother. So I decided to lift the bed so my mother could sit up, the bed was broken and it took hours for them to replace the bed. When they did, they left the broken bed in the middle of the room where the nurses had a very hard time moving the hoyer lift. 10:00am, no one has come to get my mother or have they've yet to dress her. I'm beside myself. One nurse, comes with my mother's food and places it on the sink then turns to walk out. I'm yelling at them to get my mother up and to feed her. My mother was finally fed breakfast at 11:00am. When asked why did this happened, everyone blamed everyone else . Nurse's are sleeping at the station. Sunday was so overwhelmed by Saturday's events that I could not get out of bed to check on her. Monday, I arrive.. everyone is now ready to help. Mom had not been given any water, lips are chapped and she just wanted to sleep the day away. Tuesday I arrive, mom was supposed to be moved to a new room. but was not. Mom was in an activity, I took her back to the room. The nurse came in to change my mom, she did not know how to use the hoyer lift. She was hurting my mom as she was moving her. I had to get up to show her the proper way to use the lift and to move patients. Remember, I work in the health field. When mom is lifted out of her wheel chair her cushion is soaked. The nurse changes my mom's diaper and she is soaked. The nurse does not put clean clothes on my mom, she keeps my mother in wet clothes and puts her back in the chair. She shows me the diaper and mentioned how soaked she was. Then begins to complain to me that the nurse that was there to help my mom just left her to take care of my mom alone. Of course, I listen and take pictures of the drenched diaper and then asked the nurse why did she put my mother back in the wheelchair in wet clothes. She says, I kinda thought that she was wet. Then I said but yet you put her back in the wheelchair in wet clothes. then she says she will change her clothes. I bring all of my issues to the nurse's director to gives a GREAT song and dance to think that you are not aware of things. When I asked how do they know when a patient has been checked and cleaned. is there some type of documentation to show the last time a patient was changed or cleaned. she tells me no but confirms that my mother had not been changed in hours but blamed in on the fact that she attended an event that was only 30mins to 45mins long. Please check on your love ones, ask questions if they are in this facility or yet any facility. I've seen how the nurses make fun of the seniors, disregard their needs until they (the nurses) feel ready to tend to them. As mentioned, with pictures and documented items since my mother has been at this facility, I will not begin to share with the health department and the state of Maryland.
