My Rock at Spring Hills Mount Vernon Assisted Living

reviewed on: 03/05/2015 by Bill Young

I have wanted to write a review for a long time but I kept putting it off. I think that it is time to speak about an employee at Spring Hills Mount Vernon (SH) --- Ms. Carolyn Ko, Director of Resident Care. Anyone who is living or has lived with a loved one in dementia understands the stress that constantly increases as that loved one drifts further away. Where do I turn to, where do I go from here, and more importantly, what lies ahead. I needed an anchor, someone to talk to, in short, I needed a “ROCK” to hold on to in order to keep my emotions in check. I found that rock in Carolyn Ko. My wife has been a resident at SH for the last 18 months. In that time Carolyn has been there for me. Listening to my babbling – just listening. Her presence gave me strength. Carolyn has the passion and compassion of her profession. Her counsel has always been straight forward and caring-- and it still is. I remember the times when I was home in the evenings and the phone would ring. This would happen many times; sometimes at 8:00 pm and other times at 9 or 10 PM. I would answer the phone and the voice of Carolyn would come back at me with “Bill, this is Carolyn, what are you doing?” “Nothing” “Well I just left the office, talk to me”. She would then tell me all of my wife’s ups and downs, her setbacks and her accomplishments. She would call constantly. Needless to say that I found my “ROCK”. I remember the night when the phone rang and you guessed it, it was Carolyn however it was a different type of phone call. “Bill, can I drop by for a glass of wine?” --- Sure. That night we talked about what to expect and what I needed to do in preparation for finality. My ROCK talked and I cried. I needed to hear this, I needed to be prepared. I had mentioned my need for more information to Carolyn in the past and she ignored it. She just knew that I was not ready. This night she knew that it was time. Sweet Carolyn sat there talking to me, holding my hand, letting me cry and then she told me that what I was doing was a normal part of the grieving process that it was alright to feel the way I did. She validated what I was saying and feeling. This conversation could not be conducted in her office or over the phone. It had to take place in a comfortable familiar setting – my living room. Her foresight on how to approach this subject and where to conduct it was outstanding. I am now empowered with the tools I need. I have her gift of knowledge. My wife and I just celebrated our 55th year together. How much longer will I have her? Who knows. I do know that I am ready for whatever comes my way. Carolyn made me get ready. She made me get into a comfort zone. She made me stronger. THE WORLD NEEDS MORE CAROLYN Ko’s. Bill Young 10/8/14

All I hoped for and more

I searched hard to find quality and affordable care for my father. Spring Hills Mount Vernon is just such a place. The staff treat the residents like family and are very attentive to their needs. The facility is clean and inviting. And the dining room menu is full of wonderful choices. If you are looking for a caring and safe environment for your loved one, then look at Spring Hills Mt. Vernon. You won't be disappointed! One grateful daughter

Couldn't be happier to have my Aunt living here

reviewed on: 10/19/2021 by Nancy A

I have no regrets at all with placing my loved one here . Her apartment is clean and she is clean and the community is very bright and cheery and not dreary like other communities. There are some staff that are very cheery and great and then there are others that are a little more standoffish and I feel like just trying to get to know me better. They are really on top of the care services, my loved one wandered off early in the morning and we got a call that morning to put a wander guard on her and within 24 hours it was done to make sure that she was good and taken care of. This community is very responsive and the staff are on it right away. They had a visitation regulation and it was a little hard they listened to feedback and now the hours have increased with a few other rules to protect the residents. They for sure listen to what the families have to say. They also have a nice selection of food for the residents. They have activities like piano and sing a longs, and bingo. My loved one would like more movie nights and card games but with more staff this may change. This was one of the most affordable places that I found in my search.

Friendly and inviting. The staff is great. They are encouraging and readily match up a new tenant with an individual they feel may have some similarities so the individual feels readily accepted. I have high hopes for this place and refer to it as my new house.

Mom Doing Great With Her Move To This Community

reviewed on: 09/06/2017 by Anonymous

My mother is doing great with her move to this community. I do feel comfortable with her move here. She is safe, and in good hands. They have a good staff, and they are providing her with good care. They do a good job with the cleanliness around the facility. There a nice meals, and offer good activities. The only issue I had was on our moving day the elevator went out, and that made moving day harder than what we thought it would be. Other than that issue everything is working out well, and this is a community I would recommend.
