Thank you Dominion Team

reviewed on: 11/18/2015 by Denise Chiera

Even though my mother in laws stay at Dominion was very short, she passed away recently. Even prior to her moving in the team there began getting to know her through visits with her and the family. They were committed to getting everything right for her and us. We thought we were making the best decision for her care and now after having experienced both the highs and lows of making care decisions for a loved one we know that there was not a better option out there. Because of the caliber of people who work there (Tommie, Kris, Rheana, Amanda, Ashleigh, Chris and others) along with the quality of the facility I know my mother in law had the BEST of everything. Thank you Dominion Team.

very happy

Dominion Village at Poquoson is going good overall. I do have had to stay on them about the care sometimes. There was some confusion about my mother-in-laws insulin. The doctor had changed my mother-in-laws medication dosage and forgot to note it. Also he was aloud to take 4 headache pill a day. I would give her 3 a day. One in the morning, one at lunch, and one at dinner, with the option of her taking a 4th as needed. The staff would wait for her to tell them she needed the 4th one. She is a dementia patient and she isn't going to tell them, I just thought that was silly. My in laws are thrilled to be there as far as the quality of care they are getting. The staff try hard to get them involved. I am very happy with the facility. The food is really good and these people are very picky.

We toured this community and the tour was good. The staff was friendly and they answered all our questions. The common areas were very nice but the community was too large to fit our needs.

The ratio between residence and staff is very good. There spend alot of time with the residence. The staff is friendly and easy to work with and my loved one is well taken care of. I would recommend this community to others

Don't judge a book by its cover

reviewed on: 12/16/2016 by Michelle

My church and I have been going into local nursing homes and assisted living facilities to sing Christmas carols and offer some holiday cheer to the patients that love there. I wasn't familiar with Poquoson, and when we pulled up I noticed how small it was compared to the other places we had been. This facility is true to the saying to not judge a book by its cover! When we entered the building we were greeted with smiles, staff immediately welcomed us and offered us hot chocolate and delicious brownies, one of the ladies working told me it was their "signature brownie" but boy let me tell you it was delicious! We watched as the staff helped the patients into the common area and then they also brought over their patients that loved on the memory care side. I was surprised. The other facilities we have gone to that had memory care either had us sing separately or we didn't go to that side at all. The interaction between the staff and patients warmed my heart, there were so many hugs and smiles, it felt like I was home singing to my family. It didn't feel like I was at a facility at all. A couple of the ladies working, sat In with the patients and sang along with us, holding hands with the patients. I could see that the patients and staff were a big family. It was so welcoming, we stayed and talked with the patients longer than we usually do. The patients seemed happy. Even the patients who they brought from memory care, who at first glance. It was heartbreaking as I can remember my grandma who had Alzheimers and how fast her decline was, it pulled at my heart. But again it reminded me not to judge a book by the cover. As we were socializing with the patients, the memory care patient, who pulled at my heart strings when they first wheeled her into the room, because I immediately thought of my grandma, well I watched her while we sang our Christmas carols, and she was singing along with us. (It shocked me because I remember my grandma at that stage of the disease and she was like an empty shell at the end) so I was thrilled to watch this frail looking woman, smile and sing along. Back to the socializing, so when I made my way to the frail woman I held her hand and wished her a Merry Christmas. She looked up at me and smiled. I just for a bit holding her hand, missing my grandma's smile. As we were leaving a staff member thanked us for coming, and invited us back. I had to ask her about the woman who pulled at my heart, I told her that i saw her singing with us, but when i spoke to her she didnt say a word, only Iooked up and smiled. I knew she wouldn't be able to tell me anything about her, but instead of brushing me off like most busy Healthcare workers do, she smiled and gave me a hug! She then went on to explain, that sometimes with Alzheimers and other similar diseases, that there comes a time when a person can lose their ability to speak. It could be from various reasons but one of them is that sometimes a person's brain will forget how to form words or what things are called. I must have looked puzzled because come on, I just saw her singing, but the staff member went on to explain how important music is and how it is considered a therapy. The popular Christmas carols we were singing, are stored in a different part of the brain, and most of the time not only will the patient remember and sing along, but it also brings with it the good feelings associated with the song. I was blown away, that the staff took time to explain things to me. So many things about my grandma sorta clicked in my head. Not once did she tell me any information about the woman I had asked about, but taking the time to answer my question and show support and kindness to me, and I was just a stranger to them at the facility. Well it really blew me away. I wish I would have known this small little facility was here when we were looking for my grandma. I can only imagine the difference it would have made to her and all of the grandchildren if someone would have explained it to us, the way this kind staff member did. Again this is a small place and it didn't appear to have all the fancy bells and whistles like the other places. But I can say this, none of the other places welcomed us the way this one did. It was clean and decorated beautifully, I didn't notice any smells or anything to raise a concern, but the home like feeling stood out, and the interactions I saw and my interaction with the staff, was everything I would have wanted. It definitely has a hometown southern charm you would expect in a small city like Poquoson. I will definitely be back to visit and just from this visit I would highly recommend, and if my grandma was still with us, I would have loved for her to be here and to feel at home and loved. From my personal experience with my grandma and our families search for a facility for her, bells and whistles are just that, bells and whistles. Who really cares how fancy it looks, it should be much more important how much love they will receive and there is no doubt in my mind the staff here love their patients!
